It's important that you comply with the law and know the ways in which it affects you and the way you work.
The main legislation relevant to using abrasive wheels is theProvision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998(or P.U.W.E.R). Firstly, this document makes it clear that any work equipment and machinery must be fit for purpose. Secondly, it requires that anyone who’s going to use a piece of equipment – in this case, an abrasive wheel - must receive adequate training and safety information before using that equipment.
Every employer shall ensure that all persons who use work equipment have received adequate training for purposes of health and safety, including training in the methods which may be adopted when using the work equipment, any risks which such use may entail and precautions to be taken.
The regulations deal with the work equipment and machinery used every day in workplaces and aim to keep people safe wherever equipment and machinery are used at work. PUWER replaces the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1992, carrying forward the existing requirements with a number of changes and additions.

Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) is the UK legislation that applies to the use of abrasive wheels. This states that all those involved in using abrasive wheels must be fully trained and qualified to use the equipment.
There are no legal or mandatory retraining dates for how long abrasive wheel training or a certificate of training lasts because there is no formally recognised period of validity for any health and safety training. The HSE state that refresher training should be carried out whenever it is felt necessary (for example a change in working condition, the introduction of new equipment, staff, or working practices, or when it is felt necessary to undertake refresher training). CHAS, SafeContractor, ConstructionLine, SMAS, and other members of the SSiP scheme all recommend that re-training is carried out every 3 years.
